DESCRIPTION:
The vase in my painting was originally owned by Thomas Jefferson Tolson,
a Captain in the Confederate Army, who lived in the western part of
Carteret County, NC. It was donated to the Carteret County Museum
of History and Art in Morehead City, NC by his grandson, the late
Thomas J. Tolson of Carteret County. With permission from the Museum,
I have attempted to reproduce the beauty of the vase in my painting.
The cotton in the picture was grown in fields near Goldsboro, NC in
1996. |

Illustrates a paragraph from the book "When the Water Smokes"
by Bob Simpson - quotation is sent with each print.
"Whoever said the sea is monotonous. Long rollers from some far
away storm perhaps, silently came and went. The quintet of squid rose
at night to lie near the surface, studying our ship, then clustered
together in a ring, like football players in a strategy huddle. One
broke out, looked us over and returned. A scientist made a scoop with
a long handled dip net but they broke, gathered again and faded into
the depths. Two long-billed houndfish lay just at the edge of the
light also watching, prowling. A flying fish came too close alongside,
watching like a kid seeing the circus come to town, and the net scooped
it aboard. Scientists are dangerous creatures."
