TITLE: WEEDY & RIBBON SEA DRAGONS of AUSTRALIA

DESCRIPTION:
From original monoprint and mixed media painting.

Closely related to the seahorse, the Weedy Sea Dragon exhibits one of nature's best examples of camouflage. Its weed-like outgrowths mimic the seaweed and eel grass in which it lives. A very weak swimmer, it anchors itself by its tail to any convenient object for support. Weedy Sea Dragons reach a length of 16 to 18 inches.

Also found in Australian waters, as deep as 8 fathoms (48 feet) is the Ribbon Sea Dragon (a Pipefish). This foot-long raggedy creature has long bushy eyebrows, a mustache, and thin ribbon appendages flowing from its body and tail. Both sea dragons live on tiny crustaceans.

TITLE: LEAFY SEA DRAGON

DESCRIPTION:
From original monoprint and mixed media painting.

Available in horizontal format.

The Leafy Sea Dragon. a relative of the seahorse, glides softly amidst the algae, seaweed, and eel grass in the water off the coast of Australia.

This enchanting fish has so many leaf-like appendages covering its body and tail that it resembles a floating bunch of kelp. Blending in so well with its environment, it is able to hunt down tiny shrimp it feeds on, sucking them into its tube-like mouth.

Very young Sea Dragons are light colored, while the mature ones, reaching a length of 12", are more colorful. In 1991 Australian Fisheries declared them a totally protected species.

Top matte:off white
Bottom matte: beige, moss green or light blue.
