monoprint and flounder and flying fish rubbing. Available in horizontal format.
The mermaid is still
among the most popular of legendary creatures. Half beautiful woman
and half fish, she personifies both the beauty and treachery of the
sea.
In this
painting, the windowpane flounder - so thin you can see through it -
hides among the seaweed while the mermaid, holding a blue crab,
floats gracefully through the water. For her fish tail I used an
Atlantic flying fish. This fish when disturbed or chased, uses its
side fins as wings and shoots into the air, most often flying 50
yards or less, but on occasion gliding above the water for hundreds
of yards.

FARMER'S CATCH
|
DESCRIPTION:
Color print from
original monoprint and hybrid striped bass rubbings. The hybrid
striped bass is a combination of an ocean striped bass and a
freshwater white perch or white bass. Farm raised in aquaculture
ponds, this tasty species is a result of many years of work by UNC
Sea Grant marine researchers and scientists. Like snapper and
flounder, it is a firm white-fleshed fish with a mild taste and
moist and flaky texture.

Hawksbill Sea Turtles
feast on a variety of foods, but sponges are their favorite. In the
past their beautiful shells were used to make tortiseshell ornaments
and jewelry. However, like the other six sea turtles of the
world, they are in danger of extinction. Sea turtle products
are now illegal in the United States and many other
countries.

popular of legendary creatures. Magically in this picture she
has come to life to tend the feeding of her goldfish friends.
Her graceful and flowing fish tail is a goldfish rubbing as are the
other fish with the exception of the small one at the top of the
picture.

AEGEAN SEA
MERMAID

DESCRIPTION:
As a tribute to the
2004 Summer Olympics in Athens, Greece, my mermaid swims in the
beautiful Aegean Sea, crowned like the athletes with a wreath of
olive leaves and adorned with jewelry of silver and gold. For
her fish tail I have used a rubbing of the tail of a baby mahi-mahi
(dolphin fish). Buried in the sand are amphorae - jars
once filled with wine and oil - and a treasure chest of ancient
artifacts and coins, all victims of a shipwreck more than 1400 years
ago.
